A Long Journey to International Level Energy Engineer

Me, Introducing Indonesia and Its Culture in YOSAKOI Summer School 2018, Japan
Hi, my name is Fahmi. I was born in a small town called Magelang in 1999. I didn’t have a passion until I was 14. Only then I went to senior high school, I realized that I fell in love with Math and Science. Math and Science are amazing. By using them, we know how everything works and manipulate it as we want. Three years after that, I finished my senior high school and I was getting sure that it was my passion. So, here I am, Engineering Physics, Universitas Gadjah Mada.
Here, in Engineering Physics, I know that this world has so many problems. One of them is sustainable clean energy. Let me tell it more specifically. Indonesia has many potential clean and renewable energy sources, such as geothermal, solar, and wind. A big question in my head is why we use those big potentials to supply no more than 6,2% of our energy demands (Direktorat Jenderal Energi Baru Terbarukan dan Konservasi Energi, 2016). Since then on, I have committed myself to work in energy engineering field. Even more than ordinary energy engineer, I want to be an international level energy engineer.
I fully realize that my wish is pretty hard and complicated. Therefore, I break that wish down to three smaller wishes. The smaller wishes are to have various experiences in science and engineering, to be an influential person who can interact with anyone very well, and to have worldwide knowledge.
To make my first wish true, I study hard to understand subjects in my college. It is because I need a strong science base to be an engineer. For me, academic life is not only about how high the score you get but also how science helps you to solve daily problems. To manifest what I get in the classes, I join some research teams. Since 2017, I have joined a research organization called LPKTA FT UGM (Lembaga Penelitian dan Kajian Teknik Aplikatif Fakultas Teknik Universitas Gadjah Mada). In this organization, I learn some practical skills, such as programming, data communication, graphic design, and many others. A year after that, I was succeeded to join GAMAFORCE, a flying robot team which has become a pride for UGM. GAMAFORCE has won annual Indonesian Flying Robot Competition for the latest 4 years and got the third place in Tübitak International UAV Turkey Competition in 2017. In GAMAFORCE, I work in telemetry division that is responsible for the automatic measurement and data wireless transmission from remote sources. I have been working hard to make GAMAFORCE win that national competition five times.
I heard that professional life doesn’t need only hard skill, but also soft skill. Glints by its Instagram (@glints) and website (https://glints.com/id) emphasizes that thing. I have known Glints since a year ago when I registered myself to its first batch scholarship. I was shortlisted for the interview, but unfortunately, I missed it because my email notification didn’t work like it was used to be. However, I am glad to know Glints because it always motivates and gives advice to be a good worker. In order to improve my soft skill, I also join voluntary organizations. It is not only one organization, but two. They are not local organizations, but international. I am not only the member but also the leader. The organizations are Gerakan Kerelawanan Internasional Indonesia (I am the leader of Chapter Yogyakarta) and Young Guardian Club (I was the leader of Chapter Borobudur). Yes, I am very passionate about it because it gives me many advantages, such as international networking, leadership skill, teamwork skill, and many other soft skills.
To make my third wish true, I always attempt to involve myself in international activity, or at least activity that opens my mind about this world. Besides my international-organization activities that I mentioned in the previous paragraph, I also join UGM Model United Nations (MUN) Community and Polyglot Indonesia Chapter Yogyakarta. In UGM MUN Community, we members always join conferences as if we were a delegation of a country. The country is random in each conference, so we should read a lot about various countries. Then, we are demanded to defend our represented country’s interest in the international forum. In Polyglot, we learn language and culture from countries around the world. Those organizations are still not enough for me. I always attempt to get funded to go abroad, too. In this year, I was selected to join YOSAKOI Summer School 2018 Scholarship in Japan and International Youth Leader Program in Malaysia.
Well, for me, dreams and wishes make me feel alive. With dreams and wishes, we know where we will go, what we will do, and why we do that. I will not stop chasing my dream, even when it is reached. Because whenever my dream or wish comes true, I will make a new one.
